Years after losing his first wife to breast cancer, David Fox documents the scars and the spirit of those touched by the disease.


David Fox knows a few things about survival. After losing his wife to breast cancer when she was 34, Fox was left with a 1-year-old daughter, a 4-year-old son, and a fledgling photography business on the verge of going under. Grief was a constant companion, but the demands of caring for his children and tending to his livelihood kept Fox anchored.

Ellie Anbinder and David Fox have transformed their ordeals of the suffering and sorrow of breast cancer into photographs and stories of survival and hope.

“They just came in and they wanted to show off who they were, every one of them,” said David Fox, a Brookline portrait photographer who has photographed nearly 50 survivors of breast cancer in the last few months. Fox lost his first wife, Toby, to breast cancer when she was only 34.

David Fox has spent a lot of time with survivors.

Some came, smiling and without shame, to bare the scars left by breast cancer. Others brought the mothers and daughters who sustained them through the fight. And others came alone, offering themselves as proud proof of their disease.

"Illuminating the Survivor Spirit: A Photographic Journey'' is a labor of love for Fox. and is a collaboration with "Art Because, a grass roots organization that raises money to fund research into the environmental causes of breast cancer.
